Welcome to Multifactor Authentication

In today’s digital age, securing your identity is more important than ever. That’s where Multifactor Authentication (MFA) comes into play, serving as the first initiative under our Digital Identity Program.

You might be familiar with the traditional method of logging in using just a username and password (Curtin ID). However, with the increasing sophistication of cyber threats, relying solely on passwords is no longer sufficient to protect your digital identity.  MFA takes your security to the next level by introducing an additional layer of protection. When you log in, MFA requires you to authenticate your digital identity using not just something you know (your password), but also something you have. This additional element could be a smartphone, a special hardware device, or another secure token.

MFA was implemented for all employees and associates of Curtin University in February 2023 and in the story of Mr and Mr Smith, we showcase MFA in action, demonstrating how this added layer of security provides identity protection from potential threats.

We’re excited to announce that we have entered the second phase of our Multifactor Authentication (MFA) initiative, further strengthening our commitment to enhancing our digital security.

In this next stage, we’re taking a significant step forward by implementing MFA on our Virtual Private Network (VPN). This means that when accessing the Curtin network remotely, there will now be the requirement to go through the additional layer of MFA protection.  MFA on VPN is scheduled for 5th September 2023.

By implementing Multifactor Authentication on our VPN, we’re taking a proactive approach to safeguarding your data, privacy, and overall digital experience.

What does this new phase mean for me?

When you access the Curtin VPN for the first time after 5th September, you’ll see the familiar ‘Curtin-VPN’ option.

Click on the ‘Connect’ button, and you will receive the following message:

You are a staff member. Please disconnect and re-connect selecting the Group: StaffVPN when prompted for username and password. This session will automatically disconnect shortly.

Please disconnect and you’ll then notice two additional dropdown options: ‘StaffVPN’ and ‘StaffVPN-Travel’. For those within Australia, opt for the ‘StaffVPN’ selection. If you’re connecting internationally, please choose ‘StaffVPN-Travel’.

Following this, you’ll be prompted to complete MFA authentication through the app.

So how do I register for Multifactor Authentication?

MFA has been enabled for Curtin since February 2023.  If however you have not yet set up MFA, these short instructional videos will take you through the step-by-step process to download the Microsoft Authenticator application to your phone and register for MFA.
