Brief Summary

Andrew Hutchison is a researcher in the School of Design and Art at Curtin University. Andrew's research area is the study of how emerging technology has changed the design of communications through history, and the resulting impacts on society.

He was the overall Project Leader of the Sydney-Kormoran Project, initiating the project, bringing together the stakeholder groups and funding, developing and proving techniques, integrating the science and cultural heritage aspects, planning the underwater tasks, and was one of the directors of subsea operations during the five day expedition in April 2015.

Five years in the planning, the project undertook a high resolution photographic survey of the wrecks of HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran, Australian and German warships that sank each other during 1941 in one of the most unusual sea battles in history. The project produced hundreds of hours of video footage and hundreds of thousands of still images of HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran and their debris fields. Andrew is currently working on aspects of the interpretation of this database.

Overview

Andrew's experience with interactive media began in the mid-1990s, and has included award winning and internationally exhibited experimental interactive works, as well as conventional TV documentaries. He is especially interested in communicating difficult topics to younger audiences, utilizing their experiences with social media, movies, games and the Internet.

His practice crosses the divide between traditional disciplines, and is focused in the communication of cultural heritage narratives via a range of established and emerging digital/virtual technologies.

Teachings

Andrew is currently teaching in the Animation and Games Design (AGD) Major in the School of Design and Art. The AGD major focusses on developing student's expertise with narrative, story worlds and characters for applications such as TV, movies, advertising, games, training simulations and Virtual Reality environments. The course encourages students to experiment with innovative aesthetic techniques, such as mixing 3D modelling with illustrative styles, and to consider unusual/advanced interaction techniques for virtual environments. The AGD Major aspires to equip students with skills that will serve them not only in the traditional animation and games industry, but emerging future opportunities for Virtual and Augmented Reality in entertainment, education and training.
