Brief Summary

Caroline Fleay has been with the Centre for Human Rights Education since February 2007. She received her doctorate from Curtin University in 2005 and for her final two years of study she was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Kent in Canterbury. Following this she was a lecturer in the ethics and human rights program at the University of Kent and a visiting lecturer of human rights at the Institut d'Etudes de Politique in Lille, France.

Caroline has been involved with a range of community groups providing support and advocacy for various human rights issues, including women's rights and refugee rights.

Memberships, Awards and Training

Caroline is a Board Member of the Refugee Council of Australia.

In 2009 Caroline was awarded one of the Curtin University Professional Development Scholarships.

In 2011 she was awarded the Amnesty International Australia (WA) June Fassina Award for her contribution to human rights activism.

Her research and advocacy also contributed to the Centre for Human Rights Education receiving the Pro-Vice Chancellor's Award in 2012 for their research in refugee rights.

Research Interests

Caroline's main research areas of interest include human rights practices in Australia, transnational activism and human rights in China, the rights of asylum seekers and refugees, and immigration detention in Australia.

Research Projects

Current research projects include the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees in Australia, with a focus on immigration detention and asylum seekers living in the community.
