Brief Summary

Jude has worked in public health for over 20 years before moving to an academic appointment in the School of Public Health. Her public health career has been primarily in the area of cancer control generally and smoking control specifically. She has completed a PhD titled Understanding the higher rates of smoking among lesbian and bisexual women. Her Masters of International Health thesis The role, impact and motivation of foreign health workers in Timor-Leste indicates a strong passion and understanding for development issues. As well as lecturing in health promotion she undertakes research within Curtin University's WA Centre for Health Promotion Research where her research interests are around the use of legal drugs and the health and wellbeing of marginalised groups especially LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and intersex) communities and healthy ageing. She also has a strong interest in advocacy and public policy that promote an equity and social determinants of health philosophy.

Overview

Jude Comfort is a senior lecturer in the School of Public Health, researcher in the WA Centre for Health Promotion Research and the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer Control. Her research interests include the health of diverse sexualities and gendered communities and legal drug interventions. She has a long background in public health practice and advocacy particularly in cancer control, smoking control, health equity and LGBTI health issues. She also has an ongoing interest in the use of electronic portfolios in teaching and work integrated learning practice.

This was in recognition for research work in the area of gay and lesbian health and her community involvement particularly holding the position of chair of GRAI (Gay Retirement Association Inc.)

Teachings

Teaching within the School of Public Health in both the undergraduate and post graduate health promotion course in the following areas: alcohol and other drugs, cancer control, work integrated learning (WIL) and professional practice placements for health promotion students. She has supervised undergraduate research projects, master's and PhD students. She also has a continuing interest in the use of ePortfolios, specifically Curtin's own iPortfolio system within the teaching environment. Jude has also been involved in the development and delivery of on line and face to face health promotion short courses which increase capacity of employees in public health agencies.

Research Interests

Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer Control, Research Fellow: areas of interest - tobacco control, policy approaches to population health, behavioural norms for alcohol drinking in young people.

WA Centre for Health Promotion Research, Research Associate: areas of research - health of sexual and gender minority groups especially lesbian/bisexual women's health, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex (LGBTI) ageing, determinants of LGBTI health and wellbeing, smoking control, youth alcohol use, professional practice competencies of health promotion students. Social determinants of health in vulnerable groups.

Within her teaching portfolio: work integrated learning (WIL), use of ePortfolios for evidence based authentic assessment, graduate attributes and graduate employability. Impact of student mobility (overseas experience) on learning.
