Overview

Jon is the Academic Registrar at Curtin University, where he provides overarching leadership on academic policy development and implementation. He has a particular interest in assessment and the promotion of academic integrity. A core part of this role involves upholding the University's commitment to quality, standards and academic performance. Jon also acts in the capacity of an internal ombusdman dealing with student appeals and/or complaints to ensure they are resolved fairly. Since taking up this role in 2016, Jon has led major policy changes to key areas including: Awards and Graduation; Admissions and Enrolment; Assessment, and Student Discipline, all of which were achieved through a process of collegial and open consultation. During 2016-7 he chaired the Academic Calendar Implementation Group which reviewed Curtin's calendar provision across global campuses, leading to the introduction of innovative intensive teaching periods from 2018 onwards.

Jon joined Curtin in 2008, from the University of Plymouth (UK), where he was the Educational Development and Learning Technologies (EDaLT) Acting Head of Department and Program Director of academic development programs for new and experienced staff. Prior to taking up the role of Academic Registrar and between 2008 and 2016 he was located within Curtin Learning & Teaching initially as the Manager, Assessment and then later as the Director, Assessment and Quality Learning. During this period he was responsible for the introduction of a number of university-wide initiatives. These spanned policy updates (e.g. assessment, course approval) and strategic initiatives. Jon oversaw the introduction of university-wide Assessment Quality Panels designed to review assessment practices across courses. Working with software developers, he led the conception and development of an innovative university-wide Plagiarism Reporting System. Jon undertook a lead role in the development of the University Quality Indicators framework, and played a major role in the analysis of national level student survey (QILT) data, which subsequently led to the development of a new business intelligence benchmarking tool.

Jon is active in research and publishes in the field of quality, policy, and technology enhanced learning and assessment. He is particularly interested in the affordances of new technologies in higher education, and recently examined the role of technology in remote invigilated examinations through the lens of a national forum Assessment Integrity and the Role of Examinations. He is currently examining the governance frameworks for authentication and credit transfer for MOOCs, MicroMasters and other online provision.
