Brief Summary

Dr Shirlee-ann Knight (Shirl) is a lecturer/unit coordinator in the School of Management. She has held this position for four years, teaching initially in the area of database design and business intelligence (2014-2016) and is currently the unit coordinator of the Faculty of Business and Law core undergraduate unit – Introduction to Business Information Systems.  She coordinates the unit across 5 locations/campus’ including a fully online version of the unit, working with and mentoring multiple lecturing and tutoring staff.

Prior to her current role, Dr Knight was a cross-disciplinary researching academic for 5 years (post-doctoral) at Edith Cowan University (ECU), working as a researcher and research/project supervisor across 3 schools in the Faculty of Computing, Health & Science, incl. School of Computer & Security Science (SCSS); School of Exercise & Health Sciences (SEHS); and School of Nursing & Midwifery (SNM). Using expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, she has specialised in the analysis of complex relationships existent between natural/biological and built/engineered aspects of information systems and how this can help build more intelligent information and business systems in the context of Health ICT.

PhD scholarship- World-wide research into how 80 academic (post-grad & staff) researchers interact with web-based search engines to retrieve high-quality information. Used in the development of the project’s Internet Crawler (i.e., search engine) which used “information quality” based algorithms to crawl and rank Web content. Front-end GUI- (Graphic User Interface) development of the project’s search engine.

  • PhD: Knight, S.A. (2008) User Perceptions of Information Quality in World Wide Web Information Retrieval Behaviour. Unpublished PhD Thesis, School of MIS; Edith Cowan University. Cited by 29 (GoogleScholar: 01/2018)
    Thesis investigated how users’ engage their perceptions of information/data quality when exploiting electronic information environments. Funded by an ARC Discovery Project between ECU and University of Wollongong (DP0452862) this doctorate earned the prestigious “2008 Ballou & Pazer DQ/IQ Dissertation of the Year” awarded internationally (from ICIQ at Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for its contribution to the field of Systems-based Information Quality and/or Data Quality research.
