Overview

Tom Cronje is a Senior Lecturer in the Finance and Banking Department.  He has extensive practical industry experience and completed of specialised courses like Credit Risk Management and Bank Financial Management presented by international bank training institutions like the Belgium Bankers Acadamy.

His expertise in banking has been acknowledged by his previous appointment on the National Standard Generating bodies for Banking and Insurance in South Africa, as well as the Faculty Board for Finance and Credit of the South African Institute for Bankers.

1989 - Academic Honours from the University of Pretoria.

1990 - Roll of Honour, Trust Bank of Africa Limited, for the national best performance in Credit Training Courses.

1997 - Recipient of an ABSA Management Award.

1997 - Recipient of the ASBA Cheif Executive's Award for excellent contribution to the success of the company.

2007 - Paper presented at the 19th South African Institute of Management Scientists conference at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa, selected as the best paper.

Employment History

Tom was a credit training manager in the banking sector during 1989 to 1990. He worked in the banking sector again from 1994 to 1999 and started as a Credit Manager at the regional level to whom a number of branches reported with regard to their credit function.

He was later on requested to take over the credit training function of the ABSA Banking Group that had 35000 employees. International Banking training was also afterwards added to his portfolio. He and his team introduced a total new credit training methodology based on compulsory South African Institute of Banker papers which included practical training in regions and in-company live response television training. This initiative earned him the Chief Executive's Award for contributing to the success of the company.
