A tonne of rubbish cleared from Jurien Bay coastline
Curtin’s Jurien Bay Marine Debris Program continued its important work during the recent tuition-free week, with 10 students from Environmental Science, and Coastal and Marine Science, volunteering their time. Together, they removed more than 1.1 tonnes of marine debris from 25 km of coastline.
Now in its 12th year, the program not only supports coastal conservation but also gives students valuable hands-on experience in the field. Working alongside the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the Jurien Bay Marine Rangers, the students sorted and recorded all debris, with data submitted to the Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s national database.
The long-standing partnership provides students with exposure to real-world environmental challenges and opportunities to connect with professionals working in marine conservation. A big thank you to Christina Powell and Nadia Mohd Razif from the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s Student Engagement team for facilitating this impactful program.
