Congratulations to the following staff on securing highly competitive grants from The Channel 7 Telethon Trust which supports research aimed at improving the lives of disadvantaged, disabled, sick and vulnerable children and their families in Western Australia.

  • Professor Kevin Batty from Curtin Medical School was awarded funding for his project “Compatibility of intravenous drugs for neonatal care settings”. Sick babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units commonly depend on multiple intravenous (IV) medicines. This research will test the safety and efficacy of co-administered IV medications to reduce the risk of catastrophic outcomes associated with incompatible medications and minimise the number of IV punctures and related health risks in vulnerable babies.
  • John Curtin Distinguished Professor Zhonghua Sun from Curtin Medical School was awarded funding for his project “Guiding congenital heart surgery in sick children”, which aims to develop a novel Mixed Reality visualisation tool, allowing surgeons to better plan and treat children living with complex congenital heart disease. The tool will lead to reduced pain and suffering, better outcomes and fewer follow up surgeries.
  • Professor Sarah Egan from the School of Population Health was awarded funding for “Project SAIL: Supporting Adolescents in Loss”, which aims to develop, with young people, an online Cognitive Behaviour Therapy intervention to prevent and treat mental health problems resulting from grief/loss. The program will improve outcomes for many teens in WA, including in rural and remote areas.
