Congratulations to project co-leader Dr George Barakos and Professor Stephen van Leeuwen from the Faculty of Science and Engineering for their significant contributions to the development of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Foundations of Mine Closure and Sustainable Transitions.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME) funded Curtin University and The University of Queensland to develop the world-first online course.

Demonstrating a high global demand for upskilling opportunities, 406 professionals from 33 countries enrolled in the free beta version of the course, with interest spanning across North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, as well as Australia. Notably, more than half of the course participants identified as women, signifying their commitment to driving the post-mine transition agenda.

The first cohort of students completed the course with extremely positive feedback, achieving an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5. A paid version with assessments and certification is now being developed.
