Curtin recently welcomed East Java delegates to campus as part of the inaugural Western Australia East Java University Consortium (WAEJUC) Research Summit, held from 28 April to 1 May.

The summit marked the 35th anniversary of the WA-East Java sister-states agreement and brought together more than 100 participants, including academics and research leaders from Curtin and six East Javanese state universities. Attendees also included Indonesia’s Consulate General Ibu Listiana Operananta, Ambassador Dr Siswo Pramono, representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and WA Government officials, including the Honourable Yaz Mubarakai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General; Minister for Commerce; Tertiary and International Education; and Multicultural Interests.

The East Java delegates represented Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur, Universitas Brawijaya, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Universitas Negeri Malang and Universitas Negeri Surabaya.

Curtin’s Faculty of Science and Engineering hosted a networking event led by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Ogden, followed by an information and research collaboration session opened by Professor Linley Lord, Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global.

The broader summit, delivered in partnership with Murdoch, Edith Cowan and Notre Dame universities and sponsored by Invest and Trade WA, focused on sharing successful research partnerships and building new opportunities. A return summit is planned for East Java later this year as WAEJUC nurtures an ecosystem to accelerate collaboration in advanced research across the sister states.

Thank you to everyone involved in the success of the summit.
