Curtin Human Rights Symposium: Myanmar & more
On 4 December 2023, Curtin Law School held its annual human rights symposium, this year focussing on Myanmar and implications for Australia.
The symposium featured:
- A keynote speech: Human rights and transitional justice in Myanmar, by U Thein Oo, Minister for Justice; National Unity Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
- Panel session one: Health and human rights in prisons, featured Professor Stuart Kinner from the Curtin School of Population Health and Justice Health Group Head and Professor Sean Turnell from the Lowy Institute.
- Panel session two: Labour Rights and Managing the Risks of Modern Slavery in Myanmar included Dr Fiona McGaughey, Associate Professor from UWA Law School and Khaing Zar Aung, President of the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar.
- Panel session three: Business and human rights – international connections featured Chris Sidoti, former member of the UN Human Rights Council’s Independent International Fact Finding Mission on Myanmar and Professor Sean Turnell.
The event was organised and coordinated by John Southalan from Curtin Law School, Associate Professor Htwe Htwe Thein from the School of Management and Marketing, Louise Southalan from the School of Population Health and Dr Michael Gillan from UWA Business School.
