Congratulations to Dr Kefyalew Alene, Senior Research Fellow from the School of Population Health and The Kids Research Institute Australia, on being named the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes’ (AAMRI) Rising Star for 2024.

This prestigious award celebrates exceptional early-career researchers in health and medical sciences. Dr Alene was recognised for his innovative tuberculosis research, which has provided vital new insights into the disease and strategies for its control.

Using advanced geospatial modelling, Dr Alene’s team combine satellite imaging, environmental surveillance and clinical data to identify tuberculosis ‘hot spots’ and uncover why some communities are more at risk. His research is shaping targeted interventions to limit future disease transmission.
