Congratulations to Dr Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes, multidisciplinary researcher and writer from Curtin’s Centre for Human Rights Education, on winning the 2024 City of Fremantle Hungerford Award for his manuscript የተስፋ ፈተና / Trials of Hope.

Written in English and Amharic poetry and prose, the autobiographic work shares Dr Woldeyes’ remarkable journey from boy shepherd in Ethiopia to human rights academic at Curtin.

Judged anonymously, the prestigious award is a biennial prize for an unpublished manuscript by a Western Australian author. Dr Woldeyes will receive a publishing contract with Fremantle Press, a residency fellowship with the Centre for Stories and a cash prize of $15,000.
