State Government funding announced for Toad Containment Zone
Congratulations to Professor Ben Phillips and his team from the School of Molecular and Life Sciences on receiving State Government funding for the first phase of a Toad Containment Zone.
The collaborative project will see Curtin researchers work with traditional owners, rangers, pastoralists, and fellow scientists to stop the spread of cane toads from the Kimberley to the Pilbara to prevent the ecological damage they have caused elsewhere.
The Hon Reece Whitby, Minister for Environment, announced the funding at a well-attended press conference held at Curtin’s HIVE (Hub for Immersive Visualisation and eResearch) on Wednesday, 17 July.
The Toad Containment Zone will involve upgrading pastoral and irrigation infrastructure across a 150-kilometre stretch of critical habitat between the coast and the Great Sandy Desert.
Congratulations to all involved in this important project and a special thank you to those involved in the success of the Minister’s announcement, including the Corporate Communications media team and staff from the HIVE.
