Sustainability takes centre stage at Pop-Up Picnic
Last month, a special Pop-Up Picnic at the Bentley campus put sustainability in the spotlight. A collaboration between Explore Curtin and the Sustainable Development team, the free lunch-time event drew 300 to 400 attendees for an afternoon of music, activities and sustainability-themed experiences.
The Creative Quarter buzzed with energy, featuring live music by Adrian Wilson, food vans, giant outdoor games, giveaways and interactive stalls. The Guild showcased its sustainability initiatives, student clubs ran a newspaper plant pot station and attendees had the unique opportunity to meet Rex, a critically endangered Baudin’s Cockatoo rescued after a car strike. From her perch, Rex even communicated with her wild cockatoo cousins in the surrounding trees.
Curtin Volunteers!, including Norma Bertram, student lead Andrew Levesque and fellow volunteers, assembled doll-making kits for the Uthando Project. Meanwhile, Curtin’s Transport and Sustainability team engaged staff and students in discussions about sustainable travel, gathering insights on commuting habits.
The event reinforced Curtin’s commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability on campus. Thank you to Explore Curtin; the Sustainable Development team; Greg Dunn, Lynsey Trench-Murphy, Bridget Head and Adele Collings-Hughes from the Place Activation team; Tammy Chong, Winnie Farid and Veronique Largier from the Planning team; Jessie Parrish (Project Manager, Sustainable Development Goals); and everyone involved in making the event a success.
Stay tuned for future Pop-Up Picnics planned for Semester One on the Staff Portal.
