Congratulations to the six Curtin researchers who have received funding through the WA Near-Miss Awards: Ideas Grant 2023 program.

The following staff were awarded $100,000 towards each of their projects:

  • Dr Virginie Lam from the School of Population Health received grants for two projects ‘Revolutionising multiple sclerosis treatment: An Innovative remyelination therapy to halt disease progression’ and ‘Developing prophylactic interventions for chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment for breast cancer survivors’.
  • Dr Tasmin Symons from the School of Population Health, for the project ‘Realising the potential of malaria treatment on illness, infection and transmission’.
  • Dr Ninh Ha from the School of Population Health, for the project ‘Understanding configurations of community-based multidisciplinary team care to improve management of diabetes: mixed methods in large linked administrative data in Western Australia’.
  • Associate Professor Laurence Cheung from Curtin Medical School, for the project ‘Deciphering the role of bone marrow fat cells in children with high-risk leukaemia’.
  • Dr Hani Al-Salami from Curtin Medical School, for the project ‘Repurposing of cholesterol-lowering drug to prevent hearing loss in children with cancer’.
  • Dr Roslyn Ward from the School of Allied Health, for the project ‘Application of AI in the diagnosis of speech sound disorders in children’.

Funded by the State Government’s Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund, these grants are awarded to WA researchers who narrowly missed out on the highly competitive National Health and Medical Research Council grants.
