Your research may require certain types of infrastructure or equipment. It’s important to identify the infrastructure requirements for your research in the planning stages to ensure that it’s available.

Your Research Initiation Guide (RIG) feedback may identify some facilities required, but you should also use the checklist below.

Does your research require special infrastructure, facilities or equipment?

This may include:

• Special ventilation requirements
• Special plumbing requirements
• Provision of specialised services (e.g. non-standard power, reticulated gases, purified water)
• Specific architectural or safety features
• Use of heavy equipment that will require reinforcement of the flooring
• Use of large equipment that will require a larger access way into the building or a larger room
• Use of equipment that requires shielding to either protect the equipment from the environment or protect the environment from the equipment
• Special security requirements over and above the normal swipe card access for authorised personnel
• Special software, hardware or computing requirements
• Access to specialised equipment (e.g. synchrotron, electron microscope) and people with particular expertise to use that equipment
• Access to specialised spaces (e.g. phlebotomy suites, Advanced Ultra-Clean Environment Facility, animal facility, plant growth facility, high-containment facilities) and people to carry out specialised procedures (e.g. phlebotomy, microsurgery)

Can Curtin accommodate?

Identify facilities and equipment at Curtin that can accommodate your requirements and check with the managers of those facilities. Your faculty will be able to help you.

If there are no current facilities at Curtin that can accommodate your requirements it will be necessary to either locate facilities at a partner institution or arrange to have new facilities constructed at Curtin. Identify appropriate facilities outside of Curtin and if they can be used. If you’re unsure, ask people in your area. When forming arrangements with external facilities, ensure that an appropriate partner agreement is in place. If you’re unsure, your faculty or Curtin Properties may help.

In some situations you may need to liaise with your faculty space planning team regarding renovating or building a suitable research space. Follow your faculty’s process for managing space and facilities.
