Many resources including forms and guides are available here to assist HDR students in navigating their HDR studies.
As a HDR Supervisor you provide ongoing advice and guidance, as well as constructive critical reviews of the student’s progress and work. Consequently, you should only agree to undertake supervision if you feel appropriately qualified, up-to-date in the specific field and able to be involved in supervision for the likely duration of the research program.
Principal Supervisors must be full-time or fractional-time members of the academic staff. It is preferred that the supervisor is also from the student’s enrolling area. Supervisors should hold a doctoral or master research degree (as appropriate) or approved equivalent.
It is the student’s responsibility to understand the fields of research (FoR) codes.
These codes are used by the University to report each year to the Department of Education and Training on the fields that Doctoral and Masters students are researching.

The Guidelines for Essential Facilities detail the parameters of the University’s provision of essential facilities to HDR students, and provide direction and flexibility in determining the appropriate level of support required to meet the needs of student projects.
When HDR student travel for research purposes their is specific approvals that are required. Further information on HDR student travel can be found here

It’s important that your students manage authorship to demonstrate research integrity in the dissemination of their research findings. Authorship agreements must be in place before the results of research findings are to be drafted for dissemination.
The Guidelines for Cancellation of Enrolment outline the circumstances in which a student may have their enrolment cancelled and the process that needs to be followed in this situation.

Curtin provides a wealth of guidelines and support for HDR students on thesis formatting, academic writing, copyright and submission. See Preparing and submitting your thesis and ensure your students are aware of this information.
Approximately 3 months prior to your research student submitting their thesis for examination, you need to complete the Nomination of Examiners Online form. Curtin pays an honorarium to eligible examiners, in line with amounts specified by Universities Australia.
The Guidelines for Conflict of Interest for Thesis Examination are for supervisors involved in the thesis examination process for higher degrees by research and contain information taken directly from the Conflict of Interest Guidelines prepared by the Australian Council of Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies.

When approaching potential examiners to review student’s thesis, staff may wish to use Examiner Invitation Template [.docx] to assist in writing their correspondence.
When external examiners are reviewing a thesis, they will need to complete a report similar to this example report [.pdf].
Where the recommendations of the two examiners do not allow determination of a result based on clear weight of opinion, the chairperson may recommend to the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee that an adjudicator be appointed.
