What is the Digital Platform’s Smart Campus?

Smart Campus has been developed by the Digital Platform team and is a centralised Internet of Things platform. It will allow us to onboard and utilise our network infrastructure and Curtin IoT sensors and applications to gain live operational insights with informative visualisations and accessible data endpoints. We can utilise the data to understand trends and relationships to make strategic decisions over time. This will help us improve user experience, student, and staff safety, and promote sustainability.

Is the Digital Platform’s Smart Campus platform secure?

Access to the Smart Campus platform is allowed only for authorised Curtin users. These users are provided permission only to maintain and interact with devices they own. Each connected IoT device or client must have a credential to interact with AWS IoT. All traffic to and from AWS IoT is sent securely over Transport Layer Security (TLS). Additionally, AWS cloud security mechanisms protect data as it moves between AWS IoT and other AWS services.

If we already have IoT, why do we need the Digital Platform’s Smart Campus?

Using IOT with the Digital Platform’s Smart Campus allows for a broad range of collaboration opportunities. It also removes a large proportion of the background set-up work required allowing customers to focus on the value-add component of utilising IoT. Using the centralised platform reduces the need for teams to manage their own infrastructure, enabling them to reduce overhead work over time and take advantage of common patterns that the Platform provides for its users. Additionally, data collected at scale on the platform enables users from around Curtin to use the data when they previously would not have access to the data. This Increases the ability to do analytical analysis of IoT data from a range of sources to drive operational decisions

What type of services will be available to me under the Digital Platform’s Smart Campus?

The Digital Platform’s Smart Campus platform allows users to securely connect and manage devices, collect, and analyse device data, and build and deploy solutions. As part of these features users will have a mqtt gateway that devices can publish and subscribe to data. This combined with opportunities to contribute to the Curtin data platform allows users to collect insights from a range of physical devices, centralise them and have opportunities to visualise and analyse that data.
