Volume of Learning

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) refers to the volume of learning as a notional duration of the learning of a course. The volume of learning set for a course, depends on the complexity of learning required to achieve the course learning outcomes. The AQF expresses volume of learning in equivalent full-time-year/s, where one year nominally consists of 1200 hours.

The AQF Council (2014) defines Volume of Learning as:

The volume of learning is a dimension of the complexity of a qualification. It is used with the AQF level criteria and qualification type descriptor to determine the depth and breadth of the learning outcomes of a qualification.

Following are key considerations in determining the volume of learning when designing a course:

Staffing

Equivalence of Qualifications

The HES Framework requires institutions to have teaching staff who are appropriately qualified.

The Standards require that

  • the qualifications of teaching staff are at least one AQF level higher than the course being taught, or
  • teaching staff have appropriate equivalent relevant academic, professional, or practice-based experience and expertise (Section 3.2.3)
  • staff supervising doctoral degrees must have a doctoral degree or equivalent research experience (Section 4.1 and 4.2)

Curtin Learning and Teaching Policies

The following aspects of Learning and Teaching are addressed by the following relevant policies which are accessible from the Curtin Policies website.

Guidelines for Assessment and Student Progression

Curtin has established a number of provisions for assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic and guidance for assessment practices.

Teaching at global campuses

Careful management of transnational partnerships is required to ensure that Curtin’s offshore operations delivered with a collaborator, are established and maintained in accordance with Curtin’s commitment to delivering high quality courses to all students in all locations. The following policy and procedures ensure quality and standards with regards to Curtin’s transnational teaching arrangements and outline the 1) assessment of new collaborative courses, 2) review of collaborative education services, and 3) the variation or termination of collaborative programs.
