Applying for a NHMRC grant

Researchers and research administrators preparing The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) grant applications should familiarise themselves with the information and resources provided below.

While anticipated timeframes are provided below, potential applicants are encouraged to discuss their application with their Faculty Research Development Advisor well in advance of any formal notification of funding opportunities by the NHMRC or the Research Office at Curtin.

The NHMRC’s grant management system, Sapphire, must be used to submit your application for funding and to access/update your CV and profile. Researchers are expected to update their Sapphire profile on an ongoing basis and it is an NHMRC requirement that all Chief Investigators update their CV by 30 June each year.

Many funding schemes have Minimum Data requirements. Applications that do not meet these deadlines will be removed from Sapphire. Please refer to the Key Dates for the relevant scheme below.

The Certification Form should be completed by the lead Chief Investigator (CIA) and submitted together with your completed application by the Key Dates shown below.

Investigator grants

Investigator Grants provide the highest-performing researchers at all career stages with funding for their salary (if required) and a research support package (RSP) for five years.

Ideas Grants

Ideas Grants will provide funding for up to five years for creative research by investigators at all career stages, including early and mid-career investigators, in any area of health and medical research, from discovery to implementation

The Strategic and Leveraging Grant stream includes:

Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grants

Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grants aim to support high-quality clinical trials and cohort studies that address important gaps in knowledge, leading to relevant and implementable findings for the benefit of human health. This grant opportunity is open to research proposals for clinical trials and/or cohort studies of any size – that is, they may be large or small clinical trials or cohort studies.
