Licences, permits and approvals
Research often requires licences, permits and/or approvals, either from Curtin or from an external body such as a government department.
Follow the links below to the relevant approval for your research.
Human research ethics
If your research will be conducted with or about people, or with their data or tissue, your research must undergo an ethical review process. All research on humans conducted at Curtin or by Curtin staff or students must be approved by the Curtin Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). More information can be found under Human research ethics on the Training page.
Apply through InfoEd for approval by the Curtin HREC.
Clinical trials
If your research will involve a clinical trial, an interventional study that has a biomedical or health-related outcome, your research must undergo an ethical review process. Your research must be approved by the Curtin HREC and additional regulations may apply. More information can be found under Clinical trials training on the Training page. Please contact the Clinical Trials Monitor at ORD-clinicaltrials@curtin.edu.au with any queries.

Animal ethics
If your research will be conducted with animals (living or dead) then your research must undergo an ethical review process. All research that observes, works with or involves handling animals or samples taken from animals must be approved by the Curtin Animal Ethics Committee (AEC). Apply through InfoEd for approval by the Curtin AEC.
Biological Materials
If your research will involve the use of:
- Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
- Imported biosecurity materials
- Infectious microorganisms
- Biological hazards
your research must undergo a review process. All research involving biological materials must be approved by the Curtin Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Radiation and Lasers
If your research will involve the use of:
- Radioactive substances
- High powered lasers
- X-ray or neutron emitting apparatus
- UV transilluminators
your research must undergo a review process. Your research proposal will require approval from the Curtin Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or the Curtin Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). Your research may require licensing from the WA Government. Please contact the Curtin Radiation Safety Officer at RSO@curtin.edu.au with your enquiries. Medicines and Poisons
If your research will involve the use of medicines or poisons, you may require a permit. Information can be obtained from the Health and Safety Medicines and Poisons pages. Please contact HealthandSafety@curtin.edu.au for advice.
