ARC ENGAGEMENT AND IMPACT

In 2015, as part of the National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA), the Australian Government announced a national engagement and impact (EI) assessment to examine how universities were translating research into economic, social and environmental benefits outside of academia.

A pilot EI assessment was run by the ARC in 2017, followed by an inaugural national EI assessment in 2018 which was conducted as a companion exercise to the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) exercise.

ARC EI 2018

The results of EI 2018 are presented in the Engagement and Impact Assessment 2018-19 National Report and the ARC Data Portal, where you can also find the highly rated impact studies, engagement narratives and assessment outcomes.

A shorter Flipping Book provides insights into features of high and low rated engagement, impact and approach-to-impact submissions.

ARC EI 2024

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has announced the discontinuation of the scheduled 2024 round of the Engagement and Impact (EI) assessment.

EI is administered by the ARC as a companion assessment to Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), Australia’s national research quality assessment. The ARC is currently developing a plan to transition to a new framework for research evaluation and provide a more modern, data driven assessment. As ERA and EI are interrelated exercises, changes to ERA are likely to impact EI. The ARC previously announced on 30 August 2022 that an ERA round would not be conducted in 2023.

The ARC is being supported by an expert working group in developing the transition plan and considering the resulting impacts to EI. The transition plan will be delivered to the Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP, in December 2022.

ARC EI Strategy @ Curtin

Following an announcement from the ARC advising of the discontinuation of the scheduled 2024 round of the Engagement and Impact (EI) assessment, the Curtin EI24 Strategic Advisory Group and Faculty Working Groups will be disbanded for the time being.

The Expression of Interest process to identify the strongest examples of engagement and impact to be showcased in ARC assessment Engagement and Impact narratives is also cancelled.

We thank the members of the Strategic Advisory Group and Faculty Working Groups for their efforts thus far, which have enabled Curtin to create a framework and process for the assessment which can be resumed as required, pending further updates. We also thank the many members of the Curtin community who have engaged positively with the team and volunteered their services.

Curtin’s EI submission is under the strategic leadership of the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Melinda Fitzgerald.

Coordination and management of the university’s EI submission is undertaken by the Research Engagement & Impact team within the Research Office at Curtin (ROC).

Curtin ARC EI 2024 Strategic Advisory and Working Groups

In 2022, the Research Office at Curtin established internal strategic advisory and working group structures supported by a Terms of Reference to guide Curtin University to the next round of EI taking place in 2024.
