Curtin runs a mandatory disclosure scheme which requires all employees to submit real-time disclosures of, among other things, foreign relationships and interests. Fulsome disclosures will help to protect you and Curtin by promoting transparency around foreign relationships and interests, enabling centralised assessment for potential risks and registration requirements, and the provision of tailored advice and support. Transparent disclosures are also required for staff and Curtin to meet its obligations to disclose such information to third parties including government funding agencies, such as the ARC.
Curtin’s foreign relationships and interests disclosure questions are taken from the University Foreign Interference Taskforce (UFIT) Guidelines 2021.
A video walkthrough on foreign relationships and interest disclosures is available on iPerform.

Foreign relationships and interests requiring disclosure include:
- any financial support (cash or in-kind) for education or research related activities from a country other than Australia;
- any position (paid or unpaid), honorific titles, or any other obligations to a foreign university, academic organisation or company, (eg, membership of a foreign talent recruitment program);
- any association or affiliation with a foreign government or foreign military, policing or intelligence organisation; or
- any lobbying, public communications activities or disbursement activities conducted on behalf of a foreign government, foreign government related individual or entity, or foreign political organisation, for the purpose of political or government influence.
Examples of foreign interests include, but are not limited to:
- Financial interests
- Affiliations
- Relationships
- Supplementary/Secondary employments
- Links to talent programs, academies, or foreign institutions
- Links to foreign defence, security, or military programs and institutions
- Perceived pressure, intimidation, or obligations directed towards you by foreign-aligned entities
Answering these questions will help to protect you and Curtin by promoting transparency around foreign relationships and interests, enabling centralised assessment for potential risks and registration requirements, and the provision of tailored advice and support.
If in doubt, disclose. Foreign interference by its definition is ‘covert’ and you could be unwittingly contributing.
