Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment
A provision of the Equal Opportunity Act WA 1984 recognises the importance of access to employment for a number of equity cohorts within/from our community. The University utilises s.50d and s.51 of the Act for the recruitment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Section 50d allows for roles to be filled by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples only, where Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification of the role. E.g. Research Officer interacting with Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal Cultural Facilitator and Aboriginal Liaison Officer.
- Section 51 allows for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to be given priority in recruitment processes as a measure to increase staff representation targets in line with university commitments. Section 51 can be applied to any role, for example the role of Student Support Officer could be advertised under Section 51, we would make it known in the ad that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates will be given preference, however the role is open to all applicants.
For more information, please review the Guide to using Section 50(d) and 51 of Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) at Curtin University

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity at Curtin
Curtin acknowledges Indigenous identity can be a sensitive and complex topic for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. When a prospective or current employee self-identifies whether they are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, cultural safety, confidentiality and wellbeing are at the forefront of the University’s handling of this information. It is hoped that the following FAQs will provide some transparency on why and how this information is referenced by the University. If you have any feedback or questions, please get in touch with the Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging team at staffdiversity@curtin.edu.au.
